Singapore gears up for street party
Watching cars whizz round the race track is exciting but there can be long periods of waiting before they come round again.

Penang pleasures
There's fresh crab, live from the tank, and bowls of clams ready to pop out of their shells for sauteing in a spicy sauce with garlic and lime. The air smells of roasted duck and charcoal-grilled chicken. One stall sells herbal soup; another grills seafood on skewers.

Luck be a lady
Women don't have to elbow out the men to place their bets at Singapore's Resorts World Casino's Ladies Club.

In the pink
"I am Eloise. I am six." The charming story of Eloise, the little girl who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel, has been well-loved since it was first published in 1955. So we wonder why it took the hotel so long to think of creating an Eloise suite.

Pearl of an offer
Got a craving for Penang laksa? You can fly there any day of the week now without busting the budget. From September 7, Air Asia will be flying daily to the Malaysian island, up from four times a week.

Winds of change
The man wearing the white skullcap at the Hindu grocery store on Devon Avenue plucked a quarter from his pocket and began plunking it on a coconut. If it sounded too hollow, he explained, that meant it was too dry. The fruit seemed fresh - just like my trip to Chicago. I set strict ground rules. We'd stay downtown, but that would be it. No Michigan Avenue shopping. No gazing down from the Sears Tower, especially now that it's called Willis Tower. My wife and I would explore the Windy City's vibrant neighborhoods.

Special offer! For The Standard readers
Catch up on the night action at the Singapore Grand Prix. The GP organizers and The Standard have teamed up to offer a great deal for our readers who want to watch the race in the Lion City from September 24 to 26.

Sleepless in Singapore
It's past my bedtime but we are cruising around a sleepy Singapore suburb in search of a hidden treasure. We pass house after house with darkened windows, the people inside presumably asleep. Then success - we find it. The holy grail of durian shops, 818 Durian Stall, where casino king Stanley Ho Hung-sun bought the fruit that was flown to Macau in his private jet.

Sky's the limit
Bank of China has teamed up with Singapore Airlines to launch the BOC Singapore Airlines Visa Platinum Card. From now till December 31, you can get a welcome gift of up to 7,000 KrisFlyer miles. Annual fees will be waived for as long as you're a cardholder.

Wheel and deal
Feel better about taking that long carbon- spewing flight to the United States with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts' free hotel bicycle service featuring state-of-the-art BMW Cruise and Junior Cruise Bikes.
